Bowline: The Non-Jamming Fixed Loop Knot

The bowline is a fundamental knot in fields such as mountaineering, sailing, and technical rescue. It creates a secure, fixed loop that does not cinch under load, does not slip, and most importantly: it can be untied easily, even after being subjected to significant tension.

Tying Instructions – Step by Step:

  1. Form a loop with the working end (the free end of the rope) positioned over the standing part (the load-bearing section).
  2. Pass the working end up through the loop from underneath.
  3. Wrap the working end behind the standing part.
  4. Return the working end down through the original loop, exiting on the same side it entered.
  5. Tighten the knot by pulling both the standing part and the working end. The final loop should be clean, free of twists or unnecessary bends.

Variant: Reinforced Bowline (Double Turn)
In high-risk scenarios—such as critical anchor systems, prolonged self-belaying, or technical rescue maneuvers—the bowline can be reinforced with an additional wrap:

  • Before step 3, take a second turn around the standing part with the working end.
  • Proceed with the standard steps to complete the knot.
  • Optionally, secure the knot with a backup knot (e.g., a stopper knot) using the working end around the standing part. This adds redundancy and minimizes the risk of loosening due to vibration or repeated dynamic loading.

During RADL expeditions, where early prototypes were field-tested, the bowline proved invaluable in situations requiring rapid and secure load attachment.
It was particularly effective when suspending a pack from a tree branch or anchoring it to a rock for stability in complex photographic setups.
